VALLEY STREAM, New York (WABC) -- A 75-year-old woman was hospitalized after being attacked by her two dogs on the front lawn of her home on East Avenue in Valley Stream, according to Nassau police and neighbors.

Police responded to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday for a reported dog bite incident. The woman suffered multiple lacerations and was taken to a hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.

Neighbors who witnessed the attack described a violent scene and said they remain shaken by what they saw.

"It started with the mail man, they went after the mailman and then she was trying to get the mail and they went after her," said neighbor Frida Molines-Valme.

Molines-Valme said the victim, whom she described as being like a family member, was attacked by her own dogs.

"They were so aggressive, I saw multiple bites," Molines-Valme said.

Neighbors who spoke on condition of anonymity said the woman was knocked to the ground and mauled by the dogs, which they said would not let go. They said nearby residents tried to intervene by hitting the animals with a broom, yelling and throwing water at them.

"We threw water at the dogs trying to distract them, and her clothes were all torn up, and it was terrible," Molines-Valme said.

According to neighbors, the pit bull-mix dogs eventually left the woman. One dog went into the backyard, while the other was seen on the front stoop.

The animals were removed from the property by Town of Hempstead Animal Control.

"Unfortunately, this happened," Molines-Valme said.

Sources said the mail carrier was doing well and was upset by the incident and concerned about the woman's condition.
